Hey angela from the blog use lemonade calm today. Im going to show you you how brendan and i built our diy rate skirt in bed. Thats fun and we tied just you to an elevated garden bed.
So we didnt have to bend over and so we didnt have to deal with those many weeds also we can still move around if we need to and its also really great for small spaces this build. We used cedar wood. Its a bit more expensive.
But its naturally weather resistant and it will last a lot longer in several more years than using a less expensive wood. Like pine wood for the full step by step tutorial and materialist check out my link below alright. Lets get started with this raised garden bed begin by making your initial lumber cuts for the planter box frame and the planter box laid again for a full cut list and materialist check out my link below step.
Two is to attach the 1. By 2 boards to the bottom of two of the longer. 1.
By 6 boards to create a ledge make sure the boards are centered when you attach them and use 101 quarter inch self tapping deck screws to attach. It also initially i had used four screws for attaching the 1 by 2.
But after filming this i ended up adding two more screws to each one for a total of 6 screws per board for maximum support repeat. This step on the other longer 1. By 6 board.
So that you have two longer. 1. By 6 boards with 1 by 2 ledges attached to them step.
Three is to assemble the raised planter boxes. Begin by marking 3 8. Of an inch in from both edges of the shorter.
1. By 6 boards. Which are for the sides then pre drill.
2. Pilot holes on each side of those marks.
Although. The self tapping screws that were using dont require pre gelling. We meet pilot holes for this step.
So that we would drill a more precise and straight hole since were drilling through the edge of the other board music next attach one of the shorter 1×6 boards with the pilot holes perpendicular on the end of one of the longer boards. That has the 1 by 2 ledge easing the deck screws again one thing you want to be careful of but when youre drilling these screws in is that cedar is a really soft wood so drill slowly so you dont split the wood. When drilling repeat this step on the opposite side using the other longer.
1. By 6 board. That has a ledge make sure that the 1.
By 2 ledges are both on the bottom sides of the planter box music. Repeat. These steps again to create a second planter box.
Except for this box. No.
1. By 2 ledges are needed because its going to be at the top part of your planter box step. 4.
Is to construct the wood legs and attach them to your planter boxes to construct one of the legs attach one of the 1 by 4 pieces to another 1 by 4 board with a generous amount of wood glue and one in quarter. Inch brad nails along the long edge of it to create one of the legs repeat this step for the other three legs. So you have a total of four wood legs attach the top planter box frame.
The one without the one by two ledges to the top of two wet legs use two to three deck screws on each side of the leg. Also i attach my screws from the inside corner of the planer box. So that no screw holes would show from the outside music stack the bottom planter box under the top planter box and attach that one with screws to the wood legs as well make sure the 1.
By 2 ledge side is on the bottom of the planter box music step. Five is to add the bottom wood slats and top trim to your diy raised garden bed begin by measuring the inside width of your planter box and cut 6 1. By 6 is to this size less a quarter of an inch.
So that you have room to get them in easily and space them out lay this fixed board slats out on top of the 1. By 2 ledge.
Spaced out about 3 4. Of an inch to create the bottom of your raised planter bed. Secure each board in place with one or two brad nails on each side into the 1.
By 2 ledge. Finish off the top of the raised garden bed with the remaining 1. By 2 boards cut to size to trim out the top edges attach the trim with brad nails.
The last step is to prepare your garden bed for planting lay. Some weed barrier in the bottom of the planter to prevent the dirt from coming out of the slats then fill the planter box with soil specifically suited for raised garden beds finally start planting fresh herbs and flowers. We plan on lavender lots of basil red pepper mint and more in our herb garden.
I love how our diy raised garden bed turned off its been really fun painting fresh. Herbs and flowers in it and using those fresh herbs and our daily cooking. What would you plant in your base garden.
